Climate neutral printed matter

Climate neutral product

Please note that the climate calculator is only valid for Elanders’ Swedish printers since the data base to the calculator only contains measurements for Sweden (Swedish printers, Swedish electricity mix, etc.)

Climate calculator

In cooperation with Chalmers University of Technology Elanders has developed a climate calculator that takes into account the entire life cycle of printed matter when calculating greenhouse gas emissions (Carbon Footprint). Using these climate calculations Elanders can now offer to climate neutralize your printed matter by investing in certified emission reductions in UN approved CDM projects.

Give details of your printed matter in the form at the bottom of the page and we'll prepare a climate calculation for you.

CDM projects

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a system developed to regulate the binding commitment of states to reduce emissions as stated in the Kyoto Protocol. CDM can also be used by individuals and companies that on a voluntary basis want to compensate for climate-impacting emissions. CDM projects must be additional, which means that the measures would not have been taken without the trade in certified emission reductions generated in the projects.

Reduction units – CER
Each CDM project is continuously monitored by independent authorized accountants in order to insure that the criteria in the Kyoto Protocol are fulfilled. The actual emission reductions in the projects are calculated and then the UN issues a so called certificate for emission reduction (CER = Certified Emission Reduction). A reduction unit corresponds to one ton fossil carbon dioxide. The certificates are registered in an international directory with unique serial numbers which means that each CER is traceable to the project that created it. When reduction units are bought the certificates are maculated in the directory.

The use of climate compensation
In addition to reducing climate-impacting gasses in the atmosphere an investment in climate compensation also has a number of positive side effects such as technical, social and financial growth. It also generates jobs in the areas where the CDM projects are implemented.

Why invest in emission reductions abroad and not at home?
The goal in the CDM projects is to achieve the highest possible emission reduction for the money invested, something that is often possible in developing countries where energy systems are generally more carbon dioxide intense compared to industrialised countries. The greenhouse effect is a global problem and it makes no difference to the climate where the emission reductions are made. Furthermore the positive side effects are higher when investing in developing countries.

How can I climate compensate my printed matter?
In order for Elanders to climate compensate your printed matter we need the same supporting documents as when we write you a tender. The calculation can be made for a specific production, or for an estimated annual production of a printed matter that will be produced at different times. By filling in the form below we will have the information we need. We then make the climate calculation for your printed matter noting the carbon dioxide emissions for your printed matter, per item and in total for the entire edition, and we also include the cost for climate compensation. You will receive a certificate for bought reduction units and your printed matter will be labelled with the logo for Climate Neutral Product.

What does climate compensation cost?
As a general rule the additional cost for climate compensation is about 1–2 % of the order value. A reduction unit corresponding to one ton of carbon dioxide costs between SEK 200–300 depending on the CDM project chosen.
